I can't believe I'm saying this.

But minutes after the debate, all anyone can talk about is how McCain called Obama "that one". Out of all the points each man made, that's what we focus on? Was it gauche? Yes. Less than eloquent? Certainly. But I think it was McCain being fired up about a point, recognizing it was his last chance before officially losing his foothold, and needing to sputter out a close to his sentence.

I really don't think McCain meant to be racist. As much as I dislike the guy's policies, I don't know if he's that repugnant. I have more of a problem with Palin than I do with him.

What does it say about me that when my candidate finally pulls ahead, I feel bad for the other guy? I'm such a fucking bleeding heart.

As misguided as I think McCain is, his policies once reflected a decent man, and I can't say I have the courage to face what he did as a prisoner of war. I found him to be very snide and condescending tonight, assuming everyday Americans hadn't heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac and failing to censor his neurotic "my friends" tic, but I'd hate for his reputation to crash and burn based on an accidental, innocent slip. I've been arguing with a libertarian all day about how much I care about others, even the ones I disagree with, so maybe I'm being too forgiving.

What are your thoughts?

Hmm. Interesting. I absolutely agree with you. My political teacher was talking in class about going to see the first presidential debate at our historical society building with other professors and various professionals. She said that every time McCain brought up being a POW or anything related to that most of the crowd would start groaning. She said that in her mind this was so rude and disrespectful because whether we agree with him or not, he did go through this horrendous experience and came out alive and nobody can take that away from him. I also agree that I have much more of a problem with Palin than with him. Great post!

I woke up more of a cynic and felt more Obama love this morning than I did last night. I don't like the way McCain has made this campaign dirty by suddenly focusing on the Ayers connection (who was already brought up months ago by the GOP, but even Fox News refused to run the story) and man, Obama did so well last night. He was so goddamn presidential!

But I still feel pity towards McCain. I blame the GOP Machine. I hate that he has given in to it, but he used to be so moderate! And again, being a POW is an unimaginable sacrifice.

Palin, on the other hand, seems to love being a weasel and relishes bringing up how much "Obama HATES America!" Did you notice that even McCain didn't resort to this ridiculous rhetoric last night?

I know! That Ayers connection is so dimal too! They happened to be on a board together for education!!! That doesn't make two people best friends. Plus, Obama distanced himself from him long before the election. I do agree with you about Obama being so presidential last night. One more month Obama, you can do it!
