The NY Times also thought she was abysmal. In their official editorial response, they say:
"Ms. Palin’s primary tactic was simply to repeat the same thing over and over: John McCain is a maverick. So is she. To stay on that course, she had to indulge in some wildly circular logic: America does not want another Washington insider. They want Mr. McCain (who has been in Congress for nearly 26 years). Ms. Palin condemned Wall Street greed and said she and Mr. McCain would 'demand' strict oversight. In virtually the next breath, she said government should 'get out of the way' of American business.
In the end, the debate did not change the essential truth of Ms. Palin’s candidacy: Mr. McCain made a wildly irresponsible choice that shattered the image he created for himself as the honest, seasoned, experienced man of principle and judgment. It was either an act of incredible cynicism or appallingly bad judgment."Since I'm too lazy to write a full post about how terrible I thought Palin was last night, I'm going to just copy-paste what I sent to my friend Clara.
"I thought she was AWFUL!!!!!! That debate was a wreck. I don't even know where to begin. Biden was amazing, and smart, and personable, and she was so fake-folksy. Here are some random thoughts:
-Gwen Ifill is writing a book on Obama so unfortunately had to be very careful in not treating Palin unfairly. Unfortunately, this meant she couldn't grill Palin when she refused to answer a question. A good moderator would have said "Now wait, you didn't answer my question." But if she did this, the conservatives would cry bias.
-It was smart that Biden went after McCain instead of Palin, so nobody could say he was "too mean" to her.
-She said nothing on Pakistan, even though the question was about whether Pakistan or Iran was a bigger threat. All she did was repeat a canned response about Iran and nuclear (NU-CUE-LER) weapons.
-Chris Matthews said she sounded like she was at a spelling bee. She would repeat the same lines over and over, showing she was just memorizing huge chunks of canned responses.
-She constantly evaded questions and rebuttals by Biden, by saying "I'm not gonna answer the way you want me to!"
-THE FUCKING WINKING. THE FUCKING "GOSH DARNS". fuck her.
-She never answered Biden's constant questioning of how McCain is a maverick when he's voted for Bush 90% of the time.
-She set it up as a false dichotomy and said Barack would raise taxes for the middle class and that he voted to raise taxes for people who make less than $42,00. He did not.
-She said the U.S. has a responsibility to get the rest of the world environmentally friendly. Excuse me? We're the laggers compared to the rest of the developed world. We're practically up there with China as far as our wastefulness.
-She said General McLellan instead of McKiernan.
-She quoted Reagan as he was talking about the dangers of MEDICARE.
-After Biden got choked up when talking about how he lost his wife and daughter and almost lost his sons in the same car accident, Palin turned to the camera and without missing a step, went on to talk about how McCain is a maverick.
-She said Biden spent too much time talking about the past, but how on earth do you champion change in government without explaining WHY things need to change?
...I hate her."
