now i regret finishing college semi-on-time

i wish i had jstor access so i could read this article:

From Baudelaire to Christian Dior: The Poetics of Fashion
Remy G. Saisselin
The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Vol. 18, No. 1 (Sep., 1959), pp. 109-115
doi:10.2307/427727

i found it while googling a quote (perhaps falsely) attributed to Coco Chanel: "the essence of fashion is to appear pretty and to become ugly." it sums up some of the ambivalence i feel toward fashion. i love fashion because i love art and culture, but in the end, it's utterly superficial and material and my focus on it makes me feel a little depraved. i try to reconcile the guilt i feel when acquiring new clothes by buying vintage, from independent shops, or, in the very least, from ethical mass producers (yes, including american apparel) where workers are paid fairly. still, the feeling lingers.

ah well. at least i don't read tabloids.
