what i'm wearing, the retake

if you read my blog earlier, this is the same outfit. but the graininess of the pictures drove me crazy. so i moved outside to my dad's front yard, which is REALLY overgrown. oh, and i put eyeliner on. yessss!

today i'm mostly just applying for random jobs on the west coast. i applied to be a receptionist at a design boutique (i like to think my four year BA from UVA and two years of journalism experience make me way overqualified for that, but i'll take what i can get), an online media producer, and a reporter at the los angeles bureau of a japanese newspaper (they asked that you be fluent in japanese or spanish, and thank goodness for those seven years of spanish lessons, cause i qualify!)

FINALLY!

i finally got my much-obsessed over mooka kinney romper. oh man, i wanted it so bad! i got the other one from frances may, but this one is the one i've been coveting for months.

and guess what? it's too big! but only in length. everything i buy (except from AA since their sizes are so disgustingly small) has to be tailored, and it was silly of me to assume this would be any different. soon i'm going to show you my "to-be-tailored" pile. it is at least a foot high and contains some very expensive items i purchased in a hurry (samantha pleet, beckerman, lots o' vintage). i'd get to it a lot faster if my tailor wasn't so insanely expensive (but he is very, very talented.)

anyway, i lifted and pinched it in the back to show you how it WILL look, and boy ohhh boy am i happy with the results! sorry i cut my feet off. i was wearing black patent round toe stilettos.

psst...thank you sotto. you're truly THE best!

semi-oldies but goodies

rather than listen to any new music, lately i've been listening to old favorites. the latest cd i slightly dusted off was "the milk-eyed mender" by joanna newsom. i love her to death, but i know she is one of the most divisive singer/songwriters out there. my radio teacher, a public radio dj and huge fan of indie music, hated playing her cd. another kid i know, who writes a very popular music blog, said she should never be allowed near a microphone. and yet my other friend listens to her almost exclusively.

the problem is that her voice is very...unique, to put it nicely.

the thing is, i don't listen to her music because of her voice. i like deep, husky, fragile yet smooth vocals with a wide range, and hers is nasal, squeaky, and high. but her lyrics are amazing, as are her melodies, and i love how lush a harp can sound all by itself. she is a brilliant lyricist and musician, brainy, witty and sweet all at the same time. listening to her makes me feel like i'm in some mythical forest filled with bunnies and flowers, as cheesy as that sounds. she's working on her voice, supposedly, and it's getting a lot richer and less...squeaky/grating/strangled.

if you've never heard her, i don't expect you to like her right off the bat. it takes some getting used to. this is one of my favorite songs of hers, but i think it's much easier to listen to, say, emiliana torrini, marissa nadler, bat for lashes or bjork (all amazing) than someone like joanna. they all give off that same hyper-lyrical and dreamy vibe with much more palatable voices.

her line, "never get so attached to a poem you forget truth that lacks lyricism", is pure gold.

some outfits.

okay, i'm finally figuring out this tripod thing. i had to use my old lens (the 35-55mm) and since the aperture isn't as big, i also had to figure out what shutter speed to slow it down to so that enough light got in without using the icky flash. but i did it! success!

since i'm so lazy i just put on all the outfits i've worn at once rather than photograph myself as i really wore them.

outfit #1: what i wore to the denali show

AA tank, AA skirt, rachey comey belt, seychelles wedges

outfit #2: trying out my granny boots...in the laziest way possible

AA tank, cut-off denim shorts, vtg granny boots

outfit #3: my new purchases!

AA tank, AA skirt (i wear too much AA), nine west heels, rebecca turbow embroidered leather necklace

the cat's pajamas.

this video is AMAZING. i know it's cheesy as all what with the music and "get in touch with a friend!" stuff (i thought it was going to turn into a phone company commercial) but i love all of it. even whitney.

caught up!

sorry everyone about my lack of posting. i've been basically sleeping all day and in my waking hours, have either been running errands or reading everything i can about the media debacle involving jezebel.

confused? if you care, you can read about it here and here.

as someone who is just getting into feminism at 22, i'm pretty late to the game. i've always been progressive, always identified with the belief that men and women deserve equal rights, and always have engaged in a love-hate relationship with the media, but i never gave thought to the feminist movement as it exists today or in an historical context.

i won't blather on about what happened because everything has been said two or three times over, but the whole thing made me really sad. sad for tracie a.k.a. slut machine because her beliefs about rape are obviously very immature and her ethos seems to be one of pure self-involvement. but more so, i felt heartbroken for moe. the way she talked about being date raped, recalling saying no eleven times, but at the same time dismissing its importance made it clear the girl is struggling with some issues.

anyway, that's what i've been up to. how about you all?

westward ho!

i just got an email from my friend alex in portland asking if i wanted to sublet his apartment for the month of september. so i'll be moving out there for a month, giving me lots of time to look for jobs and more permanent housing. even if nothing comes out of it, i am still so stoked to be living in portland for a month. hurray!!!

nobama!

i love barack obama and i will vote for him in november regardless of what stupid things he says to appeal to the middle, more centrist core of independents, but this makes me sad. he was called "the most liberal senator" in 2007 by the national journal, so i seriously doubt he believes these two statements:

"I think we know that abortions rise when unwanted pregnancies rise. So, if we are continuing what has been a promising trend in the reduction of teen pregnancies, through education and abstinence education giving good information to teenagers. That is important—emphasizing the sacredness of sexual behavior to our children. I think that’s something that we can encourage. I think encouraging adoptions in a significant way. I think the proper role of government. So there are ways that we can make a difference, and those are going to be things I focus on when I am president."

"I have repeatedly said that I think it’s entirely appropriate for states to restrict or even prohibit late-term abortions as long as there is a strict, well-defined exception for the health of the mother. Now, I don’t think that "mental distress" qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term. Otherwise, as long as there is such a medical exception in place, I think we can prohibit late-term abortions."

fug dat. if you didn't already know, comprehensive sex education is one of the things i feel most strongly about. abstinence-only education DOES.NOT.WORK.

let's think about this: if you teach no sex til marriage, no masturbation, and that contraception doesn't work, what do you think is going to happen? statistics show that people won't use birth control, but they'll still have sex (isn't it something like 70% of abstinence pledges are broken?) and then, when they do get pregnant, we tell them that they made a terrible, terrible mistake (even though everyone on tv is doing it!) and they can't get an abortion. but again, they can't masturbate! even though it's completely safe and normal, the bible has some cryptic quote about a man spilling his seed and how that's bad. so um, let's ignore the idea of separation of church and state and tell teenagers to ignore all of their raging hormones and natural biological processes until bound by marriage. but wait! only straight people can marry. sorry gays. i know our culture surrounds itself with the importance of romance and love, but you should just find some other hopes and desires to occupy yourselves with instead. like the american dream! doesn't money buy happiness? oh wait.

kucinich is my man. he's super liberal, his wife has a tongue ring, AND he believes in aliens. he'd be president in my america, that's for sure.

p.s. sometimes i think i should be less political for the sake of my more conservative readers, but meh. maybe i'll change your mind. come to the left, it's far more fun!

p.p.s. i'm not the biggest fan of babies so this may color my following statement, but why on earth are they regarded as more important than adults? i saw a car with a "baby on board" sticker, and i'm thinking...the fact that there's a baby inside is the only reason for someone to drive respectfully? what about the fact that there are multiple people operating a huge fucking machine that has killed millions and driving recklessly probably isn't the smartest idea in general, regardless of the age of its passengers? ugh. as kathy griffin says, babies are so SELFISH! (ha!)

the weeeeiner! i mean, winner!

i finally got around to doing the ole hat trick for that ebay dress and the winner is miranda! yay!

email me your info (acintins@gmail.com) and i'll send it asap! i just got put on some adhd meds for my chronic fatigue syndrome (anyone wanna snort it? just kidding, if any police are reading!) so i'm feeling extra motivated.

doppelganger

does my outfit remind you of anyone? sorry the picture's so far and fuzzy, i'm in the process of figuring out my dad's old tripod.
