Also, interesting point that Clara brought up about dogs as food.Dennisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11853387026139691460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2380026113343238335.post-86330907530541805882008-08-18T13:40:00.000-04:002008-08-18T13:40:00.000-04:00I'll never forget the HBO documentary I watched ab...I'll never forget the HBO documentary I watched about the cat-and-dog-as-food market in South Korea. They showed a live cat get skinned and fried. It was the most disturbing thing I've ever seen in my life.

Also, "According to the Korean Society for the Protection of Animals, Koreans do go around in neighborhoods, find 'edible' dogs, steal them and sell them for their meat. "

How's that for fucked up?

x
allisonallisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05699884615574079730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2380026113343238335.post-62203612527232092962008-08-18T13:37:00.000-04:002008-08-18T13:37:00.000-04:00Clara,I've thought about this a lot, and I'm under...Clara,

I've thought about this a lot, and I'm understandably biased, but I'd never ever eat dog.

Dogs were not bred to be food. Cows and chickens were. If you look at the history of canine domestication, it was really symbiotic. Wolves and humans found a mutually beneficial relationship with one another, and over time dogs have been domesticated by selective breeding to fit human needs (hunting, protection, companionship).

There's never been a historical tradition for dogs to be food like cows have. I don't think there's any objectively right answer, obviously, because cows are sacred in other cultures too. But from my viewpoint, over the span of history, cattle have always been used for consumption, not companionship.

I hate factory farming. Cows are meant to eat grass, not grain. Chickens are not meant to be cooped up in teeny cages. But as far as eating them, beyond health reasons, I don't find it objectionable. Humans have canine teeth for a reason.

But if you can imagine how deplorable factory farm conditions are for cows and chickens, it's even worse for dogs. I remember reading that eating dog is a fairly modern innovation motivated primarily by saving (and making) money. Again, bias here, but dogs have been bred to be completely dependent on humans, so to be in cages all day only to then be selected as food completely destroys the human-dog bond. Last I checked, cows don't have the same need to form a family unit with their owners.

Oh and dog meat? Supposedly not very tasty. So what's the point beyond novelty?

Pigs I'm again conflicted about, since their intelligence supposedly rivals dogs'. But bacon is sooooo good!

x
allisonallisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05699884615574079730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2380026113343238335.post-23365854075370926012008-08-18T13:30:00.000-04:002008-08-18T13:30:00.000-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.allisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05699884615574079730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2380026113343238335.post-88408698586221913962008-08-18T13:22:00.000-04:002008-08-18T13:22:00.000-04:00this is a whole nother can of worms, but how do yo...this is a whole nother can of worms, but how do you feel about eating dogs? i've been thinking about it recently (since i read something about the chinese taking it off menus to avoid offending western visitors during olymipics) and i'm so torn... i don't advocate eating dogs, but i can't judge seeing as i'll eat any other animal. except bologna, that shit's disgusting.
xoxo
cms. foxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17381533698730812690noreply@blogger.com
